Escher in Italy

The Festival of Mathematics is a series of lectures and exhibits directed toward young people to show them that they can have an exciting career in Mathematics or Physics.   The show was opened with an amusing numerology lecture by Umberto Eco.  One of the highlights was a presentation by Hendrik Lenstra in which he explained the missing center to Escher’s unfinished lithograph “Print Gallery” (an animation can be seen HERE).
